Summer Reading

I’ve chosen two books that I believe are perfect for summer reading. Both books are not your typical heavy business or career read;  and the best thing – they  can be read in a very short space of time. Isn’t that what summer reading is all about?

For the Manager:  The Little Book of Coaching – Motivating People To Be Winners

Ken Blanchard, Author of the One Minute Manager, co-authored the Little Book of Coaching with Don Shula, former coach of the Miami Dolphins.

This is the perfect beach side book as it’s written  so you can easily navigate through it and pick up at any point. It’s a series of key quotes and statements that associate with their acronym: C.O.A.C.H.  This book has many inspiring ideas and stories that can be applied to both personal and business. I believe it is an essential read for anyone in a leadership or management role.

Career Reading: Johnny Bunko – The Last Career Guide You’ll Ever Need

New York Times best-selling author, Daniel Pink  wrote this book in Manga format, so end to end this book should take no more than an hour. It’s visual format and strong messaging serves as the ultimate guide to take charge of your career that may actually help you get unstuck and start doing what really makes you happy and fulfilled.  This book carries a universal message applicable to both those deeply into their career as well as for those just beginning.

Happy reading!

Are you stalled?

There are days when I sometimes just have to stop what I’m doing. And so I stop. Most times it’s because my list of unfinished ‘to do’s’ and never ending priorities have gone to the red line and are about to create a landslide on me. It’s at that point that I try to remember what it might have been like at this time the previous year or even years before.  It’s really just my general catch-all way of finding perspective on the situation. Even though I’m sure it’s just a matter of seconds, the distraction is long enough to break the cycle of my grind. My observation: today’s work climate is so fast paced that it almost seems to get faster with each year. So many new technologies, so many platforms to showcase competing engagements and deadlines.  Naturally we adapt and try our best to keep up. And because we’re constantly adapting, we sometimes trick ourselves into thinking that what we are doing with our time is effective. When the grind is so intense it is easy to fall into routines  that can actually lead you to be unproductive and quite frankly unmotivated and stalled. It’s sometimes best to just stop, regroup, and resort your priorities.

I really like Chris Brogan’s post, Grinding vs. Clocking. His one minute video clip  reminds us of what we’ve forgotten that could make all the difference.

Just before I wrote this post I took five minutes out of my day to order some okespor water shoes I’ve been meaning to buy (on my ‘to do’ list) to go with a  kayak that is due to arrive in time for this weekend. So in doing this, I’ve taken my time first mini time out. It’s a curious habit I have, and I’m sure I’m not alone, that I can leave on my ‘to do’ list  things that can actually help me be more productive and recharged.  I’m now ready to look at the rest of the  ’to do’ list of my life and regroup. At the very least, break it up into smaller bundles so I can refocus on the things most important to me right now. And as a motivator to getting this done, I’m  already visualizing myself on the kayak finding peaceful time to myself.

Hope you can get take a few minutes to get yourself out of your grind. Face it – we’re always in one. Just step out of it from time to time. Feels good.

Kill procrastination

I’ll never forget that day when my grade 7 teacher wrote the word ‘procrastination’ across the blackboard in thick white chalk. He requested that we all learn the meaning of the word, and then to never let procrastination get in the way of all the things we need to accomplish.  We’ve all done it. We’ve all put off the tasks we don’t want to do. But, we all love the feeling of crossing things off our to-do list.

Personally, I love the simplicity of TeuxDeux. Fast Company calls it “The Web’s Most Beautiful To-Do List”. I have the web version always open on my computer, and refer to the iPhone app all the time. It keeps me on track, and let’s me cross of the to-dos. My teacher would be proud.

The hidden power of smiling

I believe that so much of one’s success in life comes from one’s ability to use the power of smiling. It’s a shame that life’s demands chip away at something we apparently did so naturally before we were born.  Throughout my life, through all my successes and challenges,  I have experienced first hand the extraordinary power and strength of what smiling can do. I think I may actually smile more than the average person! Charles Darwin said that the ‘act of smiling itself actually makes us feel better.’  He’s right.

Ron Gutman’s presentation on this Ted video has some fascinating takeaways and interesting insights.  You may find yourself pulling out your old highschool yearbook after watching this video. This time, not looking at the hairstyles of your era! As someone who has made a career in the placement of people into companies I was quite taken by some of the concepts Gutman shared.

I would agree readily with Mother Teresa’s statement ‘I will never understand all the good that a simple smile can accomplish’.  I’m willing to bet that one of the m0st significant traits of the most successful companies today share is the power of the smile. I’d guess that they beat out their competitors in this area by a country mile.

To close, another great example of the power of the smile in action, a favourite of mine, is found in Validation – the art of smile

Mount the high wire

So, today is the day. The final episode of the Oprah Winfrey show airs today. Of course, it is not the last we will see of Oprah, although I will miss watching her daily show. I’m not what Oprah calls an ‘ultimate viewer’, but I did enjoy her show. It was entertaining, thought-provoking, and there was some wisdom in every episode.

A few of my favourite Oprah Winfrey quotes that can not only apply to our personal lives, but also apply to business:

The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you’re willing to work.

If you want your life to be more rewarding, you have to change the way you think.

With every experience, you alone are painting your own canvas, thought by thought, choice by choice.

Energy is the essence of life. Every day you decide how you’re going to use it by knowing what you want and what it takes to reach that goal, and by maintaining focus.

The key to realizing a dream is to focus not on success but significance – and then even the small steps and little victories along your path will take on greater meaning.

Do the one thing you think you cannot do. Fail at it. Try again. Do better the second time. The only people who never tumble are those who never mount the high wire. This is your moment. Own it.

GrapeJuice raises $67,000 for Big Sisters

We are happy to announce that last night’s Grape Juice event at Society in Yaletown raised $67,000 for Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland.

Since 2007, GrapeJuice has raised $161,900 for Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland.

A highlight of the evening was when Fred Lee conducted our Sponsor-A-Match live auction, which alone, raised $24,50 in a matter of minutes. The Grape Juice guests were entertained by Fred’s enthusiasm.

CameronMcNeill.com and McNeill Nakamoto created Grape Juice to raise much needed funds to facilitate the matching process for over 190 at risk young girls on the Big Sisters waitlist.

Big Sisters of BC lower Mainland matches volunteer mentors with young girls who face a multitude of challenges. Many of the young children suffer from low-self esteem and social isolation due to poverty, abuse or neglect. For every Little Sister that is successfully matched with a volunteer mentor, a quiet revolution of hope takes place. It costs $2,000 to make and maintain one Big & Little Sister match for one year.

A big thank you to all of our generous GrapeJuice sponsors , donors, guests and volunteers!

The sun can shine everywhere anytime.

Yes Mr. Rogers you were correct when you said “it’s a beautiful day in the neighbourhood” on your TV show back in the 70′s. This show impacted my life and so many others. I think this show is a positive memory point I’ve carried with me all my life. When I stop to think about the effect one’s attitude has on others it can  really be a deal breaker in many situations. Leaving Hawaii the other week I looked out the window to see  12 airport staff all standing in a line waving at our plane  and with a smile on my face I thought what a wonderful thing to remember when leaving that beautiful place. The lovely smile and welcome I always get from my barista anytime I go to her coffee shop makes my day and makes me want to return. The way we carry our emotions can greatly affect our relationships with our ‘neighbours’, in the office and anywhere else we go.

When’s the last time you thought about the way you approach your morning and end your day with your team mates and loved ones. How about any given moment in the day? Does the sun shine around you?

This video warms my soul. Have a great day!

Cause Ya Gotta Have Faith

People, and therefore companies, have little faith these days. Faith being the unwavering belief in another people’s ability or plan to create something great. This can be a teammate, a family member, or even themselves.

Instead, they have facts. Facts about what worked well last year, what skills someone has demonstrated, and about what experiences people bring to the table.

The interesting thing is that these facts are all based in the past. Past success, past performance, past experience. With little faith, these past-based facts can begin to drive future business decisions.

“The team tried that last year and didn’t see any results, so let’s try a different approach.”
“You haven’t proven yourself yet, so I’m not going to give you this upcoming project.”
“That candidate doesn’t come with any experience in our field, so he probably won’t be of any benefit to us.”

The past dictates our future when we solely rely on facts.

Faith, on the other hand, doesn’t need proof or evidence from the past. It doesn’t compare where we are today to where we were. Instead, it looks to where we could be and creates a path from here to there.

In this environment, be it at home, at work, or in the gym, you are surrounded by trust, confidence, and inspiration. You innovate constantly as there is always a new future to be created. You dream big dreams and then turn them into goals. You develop your people before they prove themselves “worthy enough” for that development. You hire based on cultural fit. You take big risks and see what sticks.

For some, running your life (or company) based completely on faith is unbelievable.
For others, it’s the only thing that works.

The Ultimate Productivity Tool

Yoga, adrenaline sports, education, networking, training.

Yes, all of these will undoubtedly help you in life, but here’s another tool that is so often overlooked: sleep.

My life has changed a lot over the last few years, and I’ve become increasingly aware of the importance of sleep. Nights out, work demands, sports, pregnancy, and a restless toddler all conspire against a quiet night’s rest.  When I was younger I could make do with four or five hours of sleep, leaning on my coffee mug when required. Now, irritability and blandness creeps in where my creativity and sense of humour used to be. And now I realize:

Sleep brings more joy, effectiveness and productivity into our lives. It is vital to every type of success.

Arianna Huffington’s funny TED Talk about the importance of balance and getting your Z’s really hit home. A successful entrepreneur in her own right, she points out that having a high IQ or a busy schedule doesn’t translate into successful business or good leadership. Even the most brilliant leaders require time for reflection and rest to make the most of their abilities.

Ms. Huffington seems to be on to something! Years ago, she badly injured herself after falling due to exhaustion. She then re-engineered her entire life to incorporate more sleep. Last week she sold her 5+ year old company, the Huffington Post, for USD $315 million. Not a bad return on investment.
